Totally agree. There is only 1 cook and the experience alone is worth the cash.
Excellent pasta, excellent service, charming setting.
Simple food. Friendly service. Cash only.
It's what you expect and more: small, personal setting with wonderfully simple food. Only one person working in the kitchen and taking care of a room full of people. Super fresh ingredients with personal service. What's not to love?
Wow. What an experience. Words can't describe this one. Just try it out. Bring wine and cash. Report back.
Take a trip to Italy with out a plane!!!! Go ahead its worth the lyft! And take two bottles of wine to this gorgeous south philly BYOB. The charm and service are top notch. And the food will do the talking 👌. Save room for dessert 🍋
great atmosphere and even better door. Really reasonable price for the quality of the food. would recommend to anyone
Owner and his family are amazingly accommodating. Service is great. Food is amazing!
a gem. Mom and Pop restaurant. fresh Italian food. if you prefer franchises and the "scene", don't go here.
One of the best dinners I’ve ever had. Visiting from Phoenix and happened upon the restaurant by accident. The owner was welcoming and shared some of the history of the building. Overall a great evening.
Phenomenal, genuine service, delicious food.
The food was fresh, made by scratch by the owner, owner lives upstairs..Relaxed atmosphere. When in south philly at must
A wonderful experience! Food is simple but delicious. Service is excellent. Love this place!
We had a horrible experience. We were waiting for our food for almost an hour. No one spoke to us. Finally at about the hour point, the owner said that the food would be up momentarily and that his wife was the only one in the kitchen.Twenty minutes later --- the food came. No apology, No compensation like 10% off the bill. The restaurant is very, very small. The owner went around asking others if they were enjoying themselves. He totally ignored us. No acknowledgement of us even being present. Ignoring us does not make it better. Can you tell I am still angry?
Best authentic Italian. BYOB and cash only. Only open on Friday and Saturday
We ate Sunday evening dinner here with a group of 6. It was a very comfortable and homey atmosphere, totally enjoyable! The owner and the waitress were both friendly and welcoming, and the waitress was able to answer every question and obviously knew the kitchen process and the choices extremely well. There was even a risotto for those of us going gluten-free, and the other choices looked amazing as well. Everyone enjoyed their food; the portobello mushroom and polenta appetizer was delicious! Tortelloni with sausage were reminiscent of my grandmother's kitchen! Lemon tart was perfect and the next time I'll get a whole one for myself! Whoever thought the owner was "creepy" is sadly mistaken--he is quite friendly and proud of his restaurant, as well he should be! A very delicious and satisfying evening!
A South Philly gem. They don't rush (either you or themselves) and it's a very pleasant experience. The atmosphere alone is worth a visit.
The dining room is nice, but the food is really sub-par. Bland. Not traditional, but also not Italo-American. They do serve pasta plain with a big dump of sauce on top, which is usually the sign of a bad place. This would be a great place to take someone who likes homey, rustic decor and who eats really crappy food all the time.
Authentic atmosphere and home cooked food (literally- the restaurant is on the first floor of the owners’ home!)
Arugula salad starter, polenta and sausage entree, and the lemon tart for dessert. Thank me later.
Decent food and very, very nice people. Boring menu and $15 for a tiny bowl of pasta and eggplant... Not okay with me.
Delicious food and gracious service. Quibble: Quite noisy.
Great ambiance, amazing food
One of the most pleasurable resturants in South Philly. The atmosphere is so comfortable it feels like you could stay all night. And the menu is a hit from top to bottom. You couldn't ask for a nicer evening out.
The restaurant was half full when we arrived. Is a cash only BYOB. The air conditioning is either malfunctioning or non existent. The owner was very nice and our server was ok but the food came out very slowly. Portions were a bit small. The veal tortellini in blue cheese red sauce was easy to eat but I couldn't discern the cheese flavor.
Nice spot for quality Italian food. the staff was friendly and observant. bring your appetite because portions are filling. menu is similar to a restaurant in jacksonville i loved.
It's as old school Italian as you can get, so it's imperfections only make it more charming. The best service you could ask for.
Saturday, 8/24/2019, 6pm changed to 7pm @ 4:30pm--no problem! Reservations recommendedService: Friendly, knowledgable, welcoming--won't rush you out.Check or cash only.Atmosphere: cross between grandma's house and a second hand shop. Seating is slightly cramped, but, folks there are nice.Food: Excellent homemade. Simple, subtle but, delicious. Smaller portions than most restaurants, but, worth it.Happy omnivorous & vegetarian couple brought home extra entrées for the next day.Ordered: Vegetarian: arugula salad, white bean soup, & portabella mushroom appetizer.Non-veg: scallops in risotto, veal ravioli, balsamic chicken.Dessert: lemon tart & tiramisu. Everything was delicious. Coffee is very good, too.
This place is fantastic!!! They are celebrating 25 years of being in business, and here is hoping they can continue for at least 25 more. Super romantic space. Wonderful service. Delicious food. BYOB. And insanely affordable price point. Can’t wait to go back!!!
Very friendly staff and the food was outstanding
Fantastic Italian restaurant full of cozy, old-world charm. The ambiance, the service, and the food were all perfect. It's a bit of a hidden gem in a neighborhood with flashier, trendier restaurants, but it's definitely worth a try if you're in the neighborhood.
Such a hidden treasure right in the middle of East Passyunk. So hidden - we literally walked right by it on our way there! This place feels like you are at a cozy cafe in Europe. The food is all prepared by one woman who owns and operates the restaurant with her husband. Extremely reasonably priced, but if you are looking for a giant serving sizes that one may be used to at many South Philly Italian restaurants then this is not the place. The servings are more in line with what you would see at a European restaurant, but not terrible small where you will walk out hungry. I can't recommend this place enough and can't wait to go back. You should not, however, they are only open for dinner on the weekends (Friday through Sunday), so definitely make sure to make reservations.
Great atmosphere, people and food
Great food and service
Excellent food but very small portions
A great substitute for a vacation in Italy. Rustic, traditional, home. Where does a guy who who eats meat for his job go to dinner..here
Just stopped in here on a whim. Lucky to get seating, and the food was great! Owner was nice, and compliments to the chef for making some delicious food.
I've never felt so comfortable in a restaurant. Great food and service.
Fantastic, intimate, delicious. Very good. BYOB, but the food was amazing.
This is one of the most unique places ever. 💛💛💛💛💛
Old school Italian. Cash Only. Small, personal and quite perfect. Take a date or loved. In an old hardware store in South Philly.
Fantastic food, warm and personable staff with the owner freely roaming around joking with guests, and no corking fee!
Limited but delicious menu
I wanted to give my husband the true Philadelphia experience and thanks to an awesome recommendation from a friend we made it to Mr. Martino's. It's cozy, friendly, and the food is delectable. We shared the polenta and portable and the ricotta appetizers plus risotto and lasagna. It was all so good - and the atmosphere is very homey. You won't be disappointed - but do BYOB from The Bottle Shop down the street.
Very friendly staff! The dinner was fantastic and plate sizes were manageable. Two of us shared two appetizers and the seasonal main course with side of Fiorellas sausages.
Service was good, waiter was excellent, food was only mediocre, octopus was chewy n not cooked very well, pasta was good, but nothing special. I've had better Italian in the city.
Absolutely amazing all around. Great presentation. Owner and server most accommodating. Simplly delicious menu items. I normally never post reviews for any place. 5 stars 10/10 would come back. Oh and did I mention it was BYOB!?Thanks again!!!
"Don't tell me what you ate. Tell me who you ate with.' Dinner isn't just about the food. It's about the people and the atmosphere. This little place will forever hold a special place in my heart. Mr. Martino is always in the dining area making sure everyone is happy. Truthfully if you cant be happy while here, then you cant be happy anywhere. I fell in love at this restaurant and also with it. The place is magical.
The best, always.
A great, cozy and quaint Italian spot. I felt like a guest at a family friend's house. The sauces are incredible. It's a BYO restaurant, but the prices are somehow still very reasonable ($10-$15 for an entree). What a deal!Call ahead to make a reservation.
